Long-Distance Relationships

People in long-distance relationships (LDR) often aim to continue to build intimacy and connection despite the miles between them. However, distance, changes in communication, differing schedules, loneliness, anxiety, stress, and loss of creativity and playfulness in the relationship can make maintenance challenging. Communication can also feel strained when it’s primarily achieved through technology. At times, technological communication can lead to misunderstanding when trying to decipher a partner’s cues, language, and intention. We see couples in long-distance relationships all the time, and while in therapy we help couples learn how to slow down, name and check their assumptions about one another, understand their responses, and communicate with greater clarity. We explore how to strengthen trust, increase intentional time for quality connection, envision a future together, and encourage both of you to pursue and balance independence within the relationship.

At Philadelphia Couples Therapy, we specialize in providing therapy for couples in long-distance relationships who hope to strengthen their relationship despite distance and additional stressors. Our therapists help uncover underlying beliefs and meaning that may be negatively impacting a couple’s ability to feel connected and cared for by one another. Relatedly, we also collaboratively explore ways to reignite creativity, intimacy, and playfulness in a couple’s relationship. Long-distance couples who work with us often find long-lasting growth in their ability to relate, connect, and foster feelings of love and passion for one another.

Our therapists are able to work with couples who reside in different states, provided that they both reside in a PSYPACT participating state.
