Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT)

What Is Emotionally Focused Family Therapy?

Emotionally focused family therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based therapy model that helps family members identify and adjust emotional cycles that have led to distance and distrust within the family. With families, EFT is used to recognize the emotional and physical needs (e.g., affection, empathy, a secure home, etc) that have gone unmet or unattended in each family member’s history. These unmet needs often play an elusive but impactful role in how family members interact with each other. As these needs and early memories are explored in therapy, EFT then focuses on the specific emotions that contribute to current family dynamics. Mutual understanding of each family member’s emotional experiences leads to each person feeling seen and understood. Old wounds become smaller as the family works towards validation and ownership of their roles. This process of restoration then shifts the family dynamic to become one of empathy, trust, and connection.

The History of EFT

EFT was created by Dr. Sue Johnson, who recognized that using an attachment-based framework was essential for understanding one’s inner self and their relationships with others. Attachment bonds are created by stability or instability based on how emotional and physical needs were met or unmet throughout childhood. However, attachment styles are not permanent; the clarity gained through EFT allows families to form secure and long-lasting bonds with each other.

Family members who engage in EFT not only restore their relationship with one another, but are also more self-compassionate and connected with others. How one feels towards their family and their generational patterns often impacts their relationship with themselves and others. For example, someone at a young age who did not experience hugging in their family may feel uncomfortable with receiving physical comfort and connection in their adult relationships. EFT may be an effective therapy modality for you and your family if you seek to experience closeness within your family and other relationships.
